3000: Himeji castle

Famous as the best-preserved example of Japanese castle building, the historical origins of Himeji castle are said to date back to the building of a fort in 1333. From a supposed resemblance to the outstretched wings of a bird, it is also known as "White Heron Castle." Birdlike or not, here it is nicely offset by the banks of azaleas in the foreground.

2016: Tulips in Tokyo

The mass of bright flower beds give a European feel to this park in a suburb of Tokyo.

The site is interesting: originally the Tachikawa airfield, it became a US air base in September 1945, then finally in 1983 it was converted to a park, commemorating fifty years of the reign of Emperor Showa (Hirohito).

A bright yellow sea of rapeseed flowers (na-no-hana) provides the foreground to this classic shot of the "bullet train" (Shinkansen) passing below Mount Fuji. This is the N700, the version introduced in 2007, which cut the journey time between Tokyo and Osaka to under two-and-a-half hours.
