White phoenix garden

1000: White phoenix garden

A pair of white birds display their filigree plumage, amidst flowers representing the four seasons. The bird name hakuhō can be translated as "white phoenix", but its origin is unclear, perhaps from an ancient Chinese mythical bird, but also an unofficial era name around the time of Emperor Kōtoku (c. 650 AD; see the Wikipedia article on era names).

Crested ibises

1000: Crested ibises

These birds are the rare toki, or crested ibis, an iconic species within Japan, which was almost completely eliminated by excessive hunting over the 19th and 20th centuries, until only a small population remained in China. Efforts are now being made to rear chicks for releasing into the wild, and there is now a small colony on Sado Island in the Sea of Japan.

Seven gods and the treasure tree
© Hakuga Takeuchi

1000: Seven gods and the treasure tree

That lovable bunch, the seven gods, admire this shapely tree. Even its leaves and cones seem to be made of money, but written down the branches are all sorts of invocations, to fortune, friendship, marital harmony, and so on, all ending (in a pun) with the big character for "tree" (木) at the bottom. Auspicious cranes and red Mount Fuji complete the scene and ensure no boringly uniform areas.

Dream of fortune
© Takeuchi Hakuga

1000: Dream of fortune

The treasure ship comes home, with its usual occupants, surrounded by all the right symbols: cranes, Mt. Fuji, hawk, pine, eggplant, and turtle. Most of the treasure is bundled up, but we see the red coral at the side of the boat. Daikokuten and Ebisu are enjoying a game of go, though curiously they have the stones placed in the squares (usually they go on the intersections).

Seven gods in their treasure boat
© Hakuga Takeuchi

1000: Seven gods in their treasure boat

The seven gods sail their boatload of treasure past an island complete with gnarled pine, plum blossom, and bamboo. They all have jovial expressions, except perhaps Benzaiten who looks as though she is concentrating on playing the lute.

Fuji 100 cranes
© Hakuga Takeuchi

1000: Fuji 100 cranes

The crane is an ancient symbol of longevity, reputedly able to grant wishes. So a combination of one hundred of these graceful birds with the auspicious red Mount Fuji makes a wonderful subject for a traditional painting.

Takeuchi Hakuga

The artist was born in 1948, in Niigata. After working for a textile company, he went independent as a textile designer. He has his own individual drawing style, bringing a fresh approach to many traditional art themes.

He goes by his given name, Hakuga, in the traditional way, signing his paintings in a stylised, but non-cursive form.
