The Age of the Samurai

On this page: Warriors and battles - Castles

The Samurai spirit: Japanese history provides plenty of hero figures from the past, and these make a distinctive subject for a puzzle. We've included the Warring States era of Chinese history, which is another popular subject for Japanese docufiction. This page also includes some digital reconstructions of historically important castles...

2000: Battle of Kawanakajima (Suwahara)

The dramatic moment in the historical fourth battle of Kawanakajima at which Uesugi Kenshin bursts into the headquarters of his opponent Takeda Shingen, who has only a signalling fan with which to fend off the attack.

This battle, in 1561, was one of a series between the Uesugi and Takeda clans, part of the very bloody infighting that eventually led to the unification of Japan under the Tokugawa Shogunate.

2000: Nobunaga - battle of Okehazama (Masago)

Oda Nobunaga (1534 – 1582), famous for his short temper and his military prowess, was the first of the three great warlords involved in the unification of 16th-century Japan, the others being his protégé Toyotomi Hideyoshi, and the first shogun, Tokugawa Ieyasu.

This is a fantasy portrait of his first great victory, at the Battle of Okehazama (in present-day Nagoya).

Further reading: start with the Wikipedia article on Nobunaga.

Born in 1960 in Okayama, western Japan, Masago followed graduation from university in physics by working for the manga artist Terasawa Buichi, a pioneer of computer graphics in manga illustration. Masago went solo in 1989, and has made a career as an illustrator specialising in Chinese historical themes. His latest role is that of costume designer for the blockbuster movie "The Promise" (2006) by the Chinese director Chen Kaige.

Masago is his family name, so he is also known as Kimiya Masago.

Naoe Kanetsugu

2000: Naoe Kanetsugu (Suwahara)

Star of the 2009 TV drama Tenchijin, Naoe Kanetsugu (1560–1620) was an important samurai of the period of transition from the Warring States to the Tokugawa Shogunate, becoming pageboy to Uesugi Kenshin, then serving the Uesugi clan for the rest of his life.

Naoe, in the centre of the picture, was allied with Ishida Mitsunari (left) in the Battle of Sekigahara which established the Tokugawa Shogunate and began the Edo period. Despite being on the losing side, Naoe was praised even by the victor Tokugawa Ieyasu (right) for his skill in retreat.

Battle of Red Cliffs
© Hiroyuki Suwahara

2000: Battle of Red Cliffs (Suwahara)

No doubt inspired by the blockbuster Chinese movie (2008) based on the same theme, this portrays the principal characters in this battle leading up to the Three Kingdoms period of ancient Chinese history (around AD 210). The precise location of the "Red cliffs" is not clear, but somewhere on the Yangtze River. The incident portrayed in the background is the firing of the ships belonging to the (northern) imperial commander Cao Cao, who had them bound together to prevent seasickness among his soldiers, with catastrophic results.

Characters from left to right: Zhuge Liang (referred to here by his "courtesy name" Kongming), Liu Bei, Cao Cao, Sun Quan, Zhou Yu

Uesugi Kenshin, warrior god
© Masago Kimiya

1000: Uesugi Kenshin, warrior god (Masago)

The youthful Uesugi Kenshin tramples on a tangle of gargoyle figures in this fantastic rendering. Famed and feared as a warrior in 16th century Japan, his death poem also features on the front of the puzzle box (not on the puzzle itself). It is written in the Chinese style: "Forty Nine Years - one night's dream - a lifetime of prosperity - a cup of sake."

1000: Edo castle

Modern-day Tokyo was once a fishing village called Edo, and it was here that this castle was built in 1457, later becoming the residence of the Tokugawa Shoguns. The keep was destroyed by fire in 1657, but the site remained, eventually becoming the present Imperial Palace. This digital reconstruction shows the castle as it may have looked four hundred years ago.

1000: Azuchi castle

The castle of Oda Nobunaga, built on the shores of Lake Biwa from 1576 to 1579, but was mostly destroyed by fire within ten years. It was not just a military castle, but also a rather luxurious residence intended to impress guests.

Now only the site remains, but this digital reconstruction gives us a bird's-eye view of the castle as it may have looked.
