This kitten has lots of teru-teru-bôzu, the "sunshine dolls" that children in Japan make the night before outings so that it doesn't rain the next day. Precariously dangling from one, ...

... in his left paw he holds another with the standard joke face made from hiragana characters: "he-no-he-no-mo-he" (pronounced as in hen, not, and mob).

Anyway, let's hope they worked!

Maneki-neko

A 'real' cat has found its way among the maneki neko ("beckoning cats"), harbingers of good fortune for business symbolised by the downturned paw. Some of them hold coins worth 10 million ryo: no conversion figures available, but it looks like success anyway.

The Japanese title, incidentally, is rakkii kyatto ('lucky cat')!

Muramatsu Makoto

The artist Muramatsu Makoto was born in 1947, and has earned numerous awards in the world of commercial illustration. His pictures of anthropomorphised animals are cute, but the cuteness is matched by a wry sense of humour. Muramatsu is his family name - he doesn't seem to sign his pictures, so I have copied the version on the box for the copyright statement.
