Yanoman calls this series of puzzles "Petit" - something of an understatement! The pieces are so small the set includes a miniature pair of tweezers for those with blunt fingers.
The last set are what they call "Petit light", only half as many pieces, but still quite a challenge for the fingers.
- Note that the minimum shipping charge of 400 yen covers about four of these puzzles, so you save by buying them together.
- For more miniature challenges see the Tenyo 1000-piece tiny puzzles
The famous wave is number one in the famous series of views of Mt. Fuji. It is more properly known as "In the Hollow of a Wave off the Coast at Kanagawa."
The waves not only dwarf the figures in the boats, but manage to make Fuji look tiny, seen only in the far distance.
The artist Katsushika Hokusai is best known for his series of 36 views of Mount Fuji, in the bold and simple style of the Ukiyo-e (or "floating world") style. He changed his name several times, so this is only the best-known of his brush names; as is the tradition, Hokusai is his given name (a fact that has plainly confused at least one art reference book).

© Sharaku
The actor Otani Oniji strikes an intense pose in the role of Yakko Edobei. A classic Sharaku kabuki portrait.
Interesting description of how ukiyo-e were made
Very little of certainty is known about Sharaku (this is his given name, though it is very likely no-one's real name; his family name, Tôshûsai, is rarely used at all). His works, caricatures of kabuki artists, appeared over the space of less than a year from mid-1794, and then he totally disappeared. Theories abound!

This is a woodcut, created in 1938, and showing Escher's combination of geometrical imagination and and naturalistic drawing technique. From the abstract pattern in the centre, white birds fly right into night, and black ones left into day, while metamorphosing down into the chessboard pattern of fields in the Dutch landscape.
Maurits Cornelis Escher (1898-1972) was a Dutch artist, who produced many well-known images of mathematical fantasies, though he had no formal training in mathematics. Animals and birds metamorphose into geometrical shapes and back again - buildings follow geometrical rules, yet defy reality.

A pair of hands? Or at least, a right hand drawing a left hand, which in turn is drawing the hand that draws it.
This is another type of "impossible object," in which the levels are tangled.

A lithograph from 1958 portrays in Escher's impeccable style an impossible building... no real rectangular building could have a ladder with its foot inside the walls at the bottom leaning against the outside at the top!
This type of "impossible object" drawing uses perspective rules tbat are always correct over a small enough area (as in the detail image), yet break down when seen as a whole.

This 1961 lithograph is another version of the impossible triangle object: perhaps it's no surprise that the object is impossible, since otherwise it would be a perpetual motion machine - the endlessly cycled water providing free power by turning the wheel. (Apparently Escher commented that it would be necessary to add water from time to time, to compensate for evaporation!)
