1000: Edo castle

Modern-day Tokyo was once a fishing village called Edo, and it was here that this castle was built in 1457, later becoming the residence of the Tokugawa Shoguns. The keep was destroyed by fire in 1657, but the site remained, eventually becoming the present Imperial Palace. This digital reconstruction shows the castle as it may have looked four hundred years ago.
