2016: Sakurajima volcano

Sakurajima (lit. "Cherry Island") was indeed an island until 1914, when an enormous lava eruption joined it back to the mainland. Now it sits benign but raw, facing the city of Kagoshima across a narrowing of the bay.

This puzzle is full of interesting texture contrasts: the concrete sprawl of a typical Japanese cityscape, the subtropical greenery, and the craggy mountain.
