300: Kaminarimon giant lantern in Asakusa

This huge lantern (about 4 m tall, sponsored by Matsushita Electric) adorns the famous entrance in Asakusa. Kaminari means "lightning", but the entrance is officially known as Furaijin-mon, after the gods of wind (fu) and thunder (rai), who sit on either side. Like all other buildings in the centre of old Tokyo, this was reconstructed after the area was completely destroyed in the Second World War.
