La Dame aux camélias

352: La Dame aux camélias (Mucha)

Mucha's poster portrays the actress Sarah Bernhardt in a performance of The Lady of the Camellias in 1896. The heroine of this story, originally an autographical novel by Alexandre Dumas, is a courtesan who wears a white camellia to welcome her lovers, and a red one to signal non-availability.

Born in Moravia in 1860, Mucha moved to Paris where he became a leading figure in the art nouveau movement that heralded the turn of the 20th century. His name was originally Alfons, but in French and English it is often written Alphonse.
