Cowslip and feather

500: Cowslip and feather (Mucha)

These two beauties hold a flower and a feather in typical Mucha style.

The "cowslip" of the title appears to refer to the cluster-headed primrose (Primula veris) which grows across Europe, and is known in England as "cowslip" - not to be confused with the different plant (Marsh marigold) called a "cowslip" in the USA. Even so, the colour (at least in this print) is a deep reddish hue, quite unlike a delicate primrose yellow.

Born in Moravia in 1860, Mucha moved to Paris where he became a leading figure in the art nouveau movement that heralded the turn of the 20th century. His name was originally Alfons, but in French and English it is often written Alphonse.
