204: Woman blowing on a glass toy (Utamaro)

One of a number of prints made by Utamaro to portray everyday amusement in 18th century Japan - this woman has a toy known as a biidoro (from the Portuguese vidro, glass) which makes a popping sound.

Born around 1753, Utamaro was one of the most successful woodblock artists in his own time, specialising in sensuous portraits of women.
