1500: The heart sutra

This famous sutra supposedly distills the sum of human wisdom into just 267 characters, here presented in the artist's inimitable style.

The original title, Yasuragu kokoro - Hannya Shingyo, adds the prefix "Consoling the heart" in Japanese to the short name of the sutra. The full title comes from Sanskrit: Maha Prajnaparamita Heart Sutra, where "Prajna" became "Hannya" as it travelled via China to Japan.

Yasukawa Shinji

Born in Osaka in 1960, Yasukawa graduated in Chinese language and literature from the Buddhism-based Bukkyo University. His pictures display the synthesis of calligraphy and art that defies simplistic Western classification.

In addition to his art, also widely published in book form, he has many exhibitions of his work, he has been responsible for teaching and design work in calligraphy. He signs his work with a seal of his given name, Shinji, or sometimes with a seal of the first character (Shin, which means "true") followed by "ji" in writing.
