1000: Red Fuji and cranes (Toko)

A simple, but classic composition, with Mount Fuji in its auspicious colouring — occasionally at dawn in late summer the whole mountain seen from the East can appear red, and this has been taken as a good omen. In the foreground more good-luck symbolism: a pair of faithful cranes augur domestic harmony, and the evergreen pines promise longevity.

This traditional artist's full name seems to be Mashima Tōkō (真島東紅), and he signs paintings with his given name Tōkō, which is surely a brush name, meaning "East crimson". No other biographical details can be found.
