Sano - the showpiece: station front (Gallery) The road leading straight down from the station, past City Hall. It has been planted as an avenue, and stripped of its wires. The new station forecourt is certainly a success, I think. Not only is it attractive, in the "arty" sense, it actually attracts people: around ten o'clock on a summer evening finds young people sitting around, playing guitars, and doing other things I though went out of fashion decades ago. The station building (red roof above) is one of the very few remaining old buildings in this central area. Currently it's the centre of a debate: should it be destroyed to build a footbridge providing direct access to the park on the north side of the tracks, or should an alternative tunnel plan be adopted so that the station can be preserved?
